10 Best Fantasy RPGs Of All Time

6. Divinity: Original Sin 2

Before Larian was the developer who made 2023 hit Baldur’s Gate 3 and after they were creators of one of the industry’s most confusingly titled games ‘Divine Divinity’, they made Divinity: Original Sin 2.

The game earned a bunch of accolades due to Larian’s refinement of their RPG-creating craft six games and 20 years in the making and the game’s unique D&D inspired gameplay mechanics which hit just the right balance between complex and very complex.

That sounds like a bad thing but plenty of RPG fans bemoan the oversimplification of open-world RPGs and Divinity: Original Sin 2 delivered a mechanically rich and deep set of characterisation choices that, while inundating to some, filled a gaming niche that had all but dried up in the AAA sphere.

While the ARPGs like Path of Exile offered seemingly endless stat and skill trees and story-forward adventures had you spoiled in the engrossing story department, Original Sin 2 managed to deliver both in spades. It’s a truly nuanced RPG with a suite of interesting characters with which to build your party, all of whom can be specced out into your dream team. The game also drew fans for the freedom offered to players in terms of flexible classes, skills, gear builds, multiple schools of magic, and the wild world of utilising environmental hazards to your advantage to name a few.

It’s a tricky game to sum up, as is the case with every game on this list, but if I had to wrap it up in a sentence that might not do it justice but is certainly accurate then that sentence would be this: Everything is on fire all the time. It’s awesome.
