10 Best Fantasy RPGs Of All Time

2. Final Fantasy VI

Don’t worry there’s no way I would dare run you all the way through a list of the greatest RPGs ever made that revolve around a magical reality and not include The Final Fantasy. The question was just which Final Fantasy and on this I’m going to have to go with Final Fantasy VI.

Final Fantasy the series is nothing short of legendary and the sixth instalment distils plenty of what's so compelling about it.

Feel free to sub in your favourite Final Fantasy game here as there are too many phenomenal entries to definitively decide which one belongs up top but 1994’s FF6 pushed things further than any game in the series had so far. The standard JRPG class mechanics were swapped out for a more flexible system, the narrative pressed the boundaries of what video game storytelling could be and what themes it was capable of dealing with, and there were more characters than ever whose stories and personalities were deeply evocative and empathetic. Also, we’d be remiss not to mention that score.

Unlike other games on our list this one is also absolutely zero fat, coming in at a tight 30-odd hours that exemplifies why Square Enix are still rolling out new Final Fantasy games and, perhaps most impressively, almost never missing.
