10. Mad Max
Here is one I know a bunch of people are excited to see, and were disappointed that they didn't get to see any gameplay of. When the trailer hit during the Sony press conference, I saw many jokingly say it was Mad Max until that was revealed to be true. The game from Avalanche Studios, the eccentric team behind Just Cause 2, has been teased for a little while and has now been confirmed. Although, Avalanche did show me a portion of the game behind closed door and I am here to report back from the wastes. I am happy to say that what I saw was brutal, fast paced and action packed as you would expect any Mad Max game to be. It is set in a new interpretation of the movie universe, being neither tied to the Mel Gibson world or the upcoming Tom Hardy version. The main goal of the game is to create your Magnum Opus, a fourwheeled death machine tailored to your own specifications. Which you will need as the world Avalanche has crafted for us to traverse is expectedly massive. While it is a pretty grim place it is one that has been realised beautifully and the studio are clearly going out of their way to not just make a quick licensed game. However, since the trailer never showed gameplay and you are probably wondering what kind of game it actually is. From the section that I saw played, it certainly has its roots in Just Cause but also with a heavier emphasis on vehicular warfare. You will often spend your time coming across other wasters driving their own death machines that you will need to bump, bash and cripple until they are a tattered mess, at which point you can go and scavenge parts from their mangled car carcasses. However, Avalanche also showed me a portion of the game where Max went on the offensive on foot. Attacking a base with through sneaking, melee and sniper fire, it is nothing too different from what the Just Cause series has previously offered. So while it may not be spectacular, it is at least robust. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBpDO45cJms There are of course worries. It will be rather crucial to the game's success that the studio finds ways to keep the wasteland compelling through out the games running time. As I eluded to, it looks very pretty, it is still just as the name implies, a baron setting. Also, with your 'Magnum Opus' being so important to the center of the game, how deep and varied that customization of the car is will be important. These are important details that we just don't know yet. I thought what I was shown looked fun, but it looked like it needed a little more depth to make it pop. Lets hope the Avalanche have packed more power under the bonnet.
