10 Best Games From E3 2013

9. FIFA 14

The word 'dynamic' is an industry buzzword that gets thrown around so much that it barely means anything anymore. So many times we will get developers and publishers selling us their gameplay as 'more dynamic' than the last. However, the thing with the word dynamic is that it doesn't really paint a picture in your head. It is near meaningless adjective that has been misused so many times that we just glaze over the word now. That is why I am quite disappointed in myself that the word I would use to describe FIFA 14 is: dynamic. However, lucky for you, I do intend to elaborate on that As I sat down to play a match I saw a warning saying 65% complete, so it is worth noting that what I played was only a little over half way done, so all of this could be tweaked and changed rendering my preview pointless. Picking to play a match between Borussia Dortmund and PSG (which I won 1-0 by the way), the first thing I recognised was that the players had more weight to them. You could almost feel the weight shifts of players as you try to maneuver them around the field. With the added weight things felt more substantial. Also, it seems to make the player animations less predictable. With the weight shifts and the seemingly improved collision physics, the players actually felt like their animations were constantly changing to fit the situation. That is true dynamism. As a result the gameplay felt less premeditated and was constantly adapting. It was definitely rough, but I would expect more polish to be applied with the other 35%. Unfortunately I didn't get to talk to anyone on the team, so I didn't get to probe what would be the main difference between this and the next generation. As I alluded to in my preview, in the first few iterations of FIFA on the current gen systems were a little more stripped down then what they had been in the Playstation 2 days. We still don't know what exactly will be gained or lost in translation, but I was at least impressed by the central gameplay as it is so far. Hopefully, with some added features to the Career mode, we could have a fantastic game on our hands.
