Spec Ops: The Line is one of those middle of the road, double A games that was destined to pick up a few sales here and there, but not set the world on fire.

Imagine the surprise of everyone everywhere when this third-person shooter somehow emerged from the pack to deliver one of the best and most thought-provoking shooter campaigns in gaming history!

The game is designed to give morality to the actions of war and the effects it has upon the sanity of a person, regularly prompting the player to consider what their actions are actually doing. There's no better example of this than the infamous white phosphorous scene.

The scene begins like you'd expect in any modern shooter. From above, you'll rain down destruction on your enemies. It's what happens after that stays with you. The team must walk through the aftermath of the white phosphorous attack, through soldiers missing limbs, horribly burnt and begging for help.

As they progress, they then find that over 40 civilians they were meant to have rescued were also burnt to death in the attack, including a mother holding a child. It's absolutely horrific stuff, and really stays with you.

The whole game is full of these moments, meaning Spec Ops: The Line was one of gaming's best secrets. There's a reason why it's developed a cult following after its release, and it's really worth checking out if you've never played it.
