10 Best LGBT+ Characters In Gaming History

5. Krem - Dragon Age: Inquisiton

Dragon Age Inquisition is absolutely packed with brilliant LGBT+ characters, such as Sera and Dorian. However, amongst all the loveable queer ass-kickers, there's nobody quite like Krem.

Appearing as BioWare's first trans character in 2014's Dragon Age Inquisition, Krem got a lot of praise. After coming to terms with his gender incongruence as a child, Krem joined the Tevinter army. However, he was exposed and hunted down. Saved by The Iron Bull (another LGBT+ character in the game), Krem finds himself fighting alongside his new ally and becoming his second-in-command.

Whilst the question was asked of why BioWare didn't cast a trans man to play Krem, hiring industry heavyweight Jennifer Hale at least showed they cared about the character's significance. Moreover, they made sure to be in constant contact with queer people to make sure the writing was respectful and correct.

Many players don't even necessarily realise Krem is trans on their playthrough, as the sum of the character's identity is more than just being present to, to use a tired phrase, "tick off a box". He serves a purpose to the wider plot but also to the internal struggles of his comrade The Iron Bull, representing the importance of personal freedom.

Krem remains a shining example on how to best listen to and represent a community.
