10 Best Modern Video Game Soundtracks

4. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Hans Zimmer)

Probably didn't expect a Call of Duty game in here, did ya?

Back in 2009, the Call of Duty franchise was the series that was breaking all the records, two years before CoD4 had brought the modern military shooter to the top of the sales chart and had made the first person shooter the most popular genre around the world. 360 no scopes were a thing people bragged about without a hint of irony and you wore your kill/death-ratio like a badge of honor, or one of shame.

And even though some skipped straight to the online multiplayer there was also the short but intense single player campaign. This action filled rollercoaster crafted some memorable setpieces like the notorious no-Russian mission, or the betrayal at the hands of general Shepherd. All this was masterfully scored with music by the legendary Hans Zimmer, famed for Inception's BWOAAAAPPPs and his engaging and epic scores for films like Dunkirk, Interstellar and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Zimmer went for a fast paced score that perfectly fitted the danger, action and realistic setting that Call of Duty was known for at the time. The nervous strings combined with distorted statics gave an ominous feeling of threat. Threats that you should probably shoot until they would go away. Tracks featured heavy drums, recalling sounds of marching soldiers and heavy gunshots. Zimmer utilised some trickery like sonar-like bleeps and filters to give certain tracks a submerged and secretive feeling.

Activision, please hire Mr. Zimmer again for the remake. We all know you can't resist the load of cash that a MW2 remake would make, so just make sure the music is top notch again.
