2. Paper Mario: Color Splash - Wii U

Paper Mario: Color Splash may not have been the Paper Mario game that fans wanted (does Nintendo remember that Paper Mario games used to be RPGs?), but it's a huge improvement over the 3DS's brutally mundane Sticker Star.

There's a lot that can be said in praise of Color Splash. Immediately apparent is its gorgeous graphics, which bring the Paper Mario series closer than ever to its papery moniker.

Seriously, there's no way the series can improve graphically at this point. The entire world has an incredibly lifelike texture to it, from the pop-up cardboard trees to Paper Mario himself - it's absolutely stunning.

Though the combat may not be the kind fans want, everything else is so top notch that it almost - almost - doesn't matter. The story is great, the dialogue is consistently hilarious and the music is a total treat.

Next time, though, it really would be nice to see the series return to its roots.
