10 Best No.5's In Gaming History
7. Driver: San Francisco
It's rare that a franchise can claim to have produced one of the best games of all time alongside one of the worst, yet here we are.
After Ubisoft followed the infamously terrible Driver 3 with the average Driver: Parallel Lines, the Driver franchise looked set to go out in a blaze of mediocrity. However, the developers had one hell of a last trick up their sleeves for the series finale.
Driver: San Francisco begins by placing protagonist John Tanner in a coma, and from there, all bets are off. The majority of the game takes place in Tanner's subconscious, allowing for supernatural feats of driving - chiefly, the ability to Shift, which is the game's term for Tanner's newfound ability to project his soul into any vehicle in San Francisco.
The developers have great fun with this ability, creating objectives such as coming in first and second in the same race, and allowing the player the freedom to perform feats such as prematurely ending a car chase by sending a possessed truck careening into your assailant's vehicle.
It's delightfully absurd, and partnered with the game's solid driving mechanics, funky soundtrack, and humorous script, creates a grin-inducing playground you'll be sorry to leave.
