10 Best No.5's In Gaming History
3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
To paraphrase the legendary Alex Ferguson, "Skyrim, eh? Bloody hell".
Because really, what else is there to be said about Bethesda's magnum opus? More than a decade since its release, Skyrim has become part of the cultural fabric of gaming - a touchstone every bit as important as the likes of Tetris, World of Warcraft, and Dark Souls.
Hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of words have been written about the fifth Elder Scrolls game, and every inch of its surface has been stripped and datamined by hordes of gamers eager to turn over its every nook and cranny. You don't inspire that level of devotion unless you've done something right, and Skyrim has a special kind of magic that shines through even now (as this writer's recent fourth playthrough can attest to).
Yes, the game is definitely showing its age - even modded up to the gills, Skyrim's creaking animation, shonky AI, and innumerable glitches are impossible to ignore - yet even the jank feels comforting now.
Like an old, battered sofa, Skyrim still makes you feel warm and fuzzy as you sink into its well-worn folds and creases.
