The definition of open world is a little bit vague. Some may picture the bustling city of Grand Theft Auto V, others may visualise Ezio Auditore climbing a tower to a vantage point and the older guard still might picture Link travelling through Hyrule for the first time.

As a throwback to retro adventure titles, Tunic hits all the right marks. The world is beautiful and inviting in its mystery, especially as the game has no dialogue or even legible written text. In fact, that’s a large part of the story: the importance of discovery lies at the heart of Tunic’s mission statement and understanding the world is only possible through exploration.

It also, like old school games of the genre, is tough as nails. Our heroic fox avatar might be all kinds of cute but he is surely some kind of badass to overcome the challenges he faces. Clever environmental puzzles and no-nonsense boss fights dot the land as you gather up pages of your instruction manual, hoping to understand more of the world’s secrets.

This world, when it isn’t trying to kill you (and heck, even when it is), is dripping with undeniable, heartwarming charm that is consistently great. Whether it’s inside the game’s dungeons or unfolding around you as you explore the overworld, the mysteries of Tunic are a joy to solve.
