10 Best Pokémon Appearances In Detective Pikachu
4. Ditto
Ditto is the best thing about the movie’s third act, though that is admittedly a low bar. Its creepy, pebble black eyes first made waves when it debuted in the Pokémon anime, and they’ve been a cult part of Ditto’s existence since then.
In the games, Ditto can transform into a perfect copy of whatever creature it sees, but in most narrative driven adventure its beady eyes are a frequent feature. They’re used to great effect here, seeing it hop between Pokémon and people alike.
The groundwork is laid early on, as it transforms into a roadie to wheel Bill Nighy’s character’s wheelchair away, but the movie does a good job of keeping the twist under wraps.
The reveal of Suki Waterhouse’s Ms. Norman with the black eyes made great use of Ditto’s mechanics, as did its switch to Machamp. Kathyrn Newton’s Lucy worked well for the final fight with Tim, but the logic kind of dissolves with Roger Clifford.
Norman and Lucy both act in quite simplistic ways which suit Ditto’s Pokémon brain, but as Clifford he seems to be far more intelligent than he should be. All the same, Ditto makes for some great set pieces in its cameo.
