10 Best Pokémon Spin-Off Games You MUST Play
7. Pokémon Ranger: Shadows Of Almia
This sequel to the first Pokémon Ranger was already one up on its predecessor when it allowed you to pick from seventeen different partner Pokémon (one for each type prior to Fairy being added) instead of the bland offering of Plusle and Minun. The gameplay was more accessible too, ironing out the kinks of the original, meaning this is an easy pick as the best Ranger game.
The action adventure genre definitely lends itself to Pokémon, with the optional quests playing into the world perfectly. The regular Pokémon games have refined their own RPG formula to a tee, but the Ranger series offered a fresh take.
The main series games are rich with narrative, but aside from hitting the mid stage gyms in a variable order, there’s nothing too personal about your gameplay. The closest you get to a quest is a little girl standing next to a vending machine asking for lemonade in exchange for a TM.
Ranger offered 60 optional questlines as well as a relatively in depth story, so it definitely had you covered in that regard. The stylus implementation wasn’t great, but honestly, was it in many DS games?
