6. Pokkén Tournament

Pokken Tournament
Nintendo

Pokken Tournament combines the fighting style of Tekken with the attacks and characters from Pokémon, all for a smoother battle than the turn-based mechanics of the latter's main titles.

It’s not exactly like Tekken though, with players switching between close hand to hand combat and getting distance to launch various jets of flame, electricity or water. Also, while Tekken typically puts emphasis on taking your opponent on rather than side stepping, Pokken pushes you to dodge, encircle and wait out your moment much more.

While it was never going to include all 800+ ‘mons (and who’d really want to take on Machamp with a Wurmple), the roster does seem a little lean. Charizard and Pikachu are there as always, with the likes of Gardevoir adding diversity to the usual favourites. With Smash offering several playable ‘mons though, Pokken feels like it needs to go bigger to truly stand out.

Although the graphics are outstanding, there’s a similarly battle focused game that just pipped Pokken to the top five. It might not look as great, but it was certainly more revolutionary for Pokémon overall...
