Type(s): Grass/Poison.

Location(s): Routes 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 24, and 25 (Bellsprout), Routes 12, 13, 14, and 15 (Weepinbell).

Similarly to the Arcanine and Ninetails, the Victreebel line is exclusive to Pokémon Blue while Pokémon Red players get access to the Vileplume line. Victreebel has the better overall stats compared to Vileplume. Both Pokémon have a Special stat of 100. However, Victreebel has an Attack stat of 105 compared to Vileplume’s 80, giving Victreebel an edge when using physical attacks. Victreebel also has a higher Speed stat, 70 to Vileplume’s 50.

Bellsprout can be encountered on Route 24, an area the player has access to before facing Misty’s Water Gym in Cerulean City. Bellsprout starts with the move ‘Vine Whip’, which has a base damage of 35, while Oddish starts with the move ‘Absorb’, which has a base damage of 20. Both Pokémon gain access to ‘Acid’ to take advantage of their Poison typing, a physical attack meaning that Victreebel’s higher attack stat will benefit here.

The later Grass moves Victreebel has access to are generally more useful as well. While Vileplume gets access to both ‘SolarBeam’ and ‘Petal Dance’ by level up, both of these moves take multiple turns to use, leaving Vileplume vulnerable. Victreebel gains access to ‘Razor Leaf’, which while having a weaker base damage, is a single turn move, giving Victreebel the initiative.
