10 Best Pokémon To Beat Generation 1

4. Snorlax

Type(s): Normal.

Location(s): Routes 12 and 16.

Snorlax is an easy recommendation for any team in Generation 1. After clearing out the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town the player is given access to the ‘Poké Flute’. This item is used to wake the sleeping Snorlaxes on Route 12 and Route 16. At least one of these encounters is mandatory as the player is unable to proceed to Fuchsia City without waking and battling one of these Pokémon.

Both Snorlaxes will be encountered at level 30. This should allow the Snorlax to easily be on par with your team due to the next gym leader, Koga, having Pokémon around level 40. By this point in the game your own team should be around the low-to-mid thirties as the previous gym leader, Erika, has a pair of level 29 Pokémon, as well as the trainers in Pokémon Tower providing additional experience.

Snorlax has incredible stats. While its low Speed stat of 30 might initially seem terrible, it’s high Attack stat of 110 and incredible Health stat of 160 make this Pokémon a force to be reckoned with. Starting out with powerful Normal type attacks like ‘Headbutt’ and quickly learning ‘Body Slam’ makes Snorlax a heavy hitter from the start. It also has access to a variety of TM moves to help with type coverage.
