10 Best PS2 Games Of All Time
9. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
After a lukewarm reception to Devil May Cry 2, Capcom needed to pull something off that would bring the fanbase back into the fold, or risk watching their demon-slaying franchise flop before it properly got off the ground. Thankfully, in 2005, they did just that with the stellar Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening.
Critics were quick to praise improvements to customisation, the combat engine and the difficulty returning to its old, challenging self. The musical score was also widely considered to be a vast improvement to its predecessor, creating a suitably angsty atmosphere to the high-paced, hack-and-slash action.
This prequel to the original entry saw a younger Dante fighting his way through legions of demons, working his way up a tower like some sort of gothic rendition of The Raid. He makes an uneasy alliance with Mary, the main antagonist’s daughter and they proceed to kick ass, take names, and ultimately set up Dante’s Devil May Cry shop, seen in the opening of the first game.
DMC’s third instalment was adored for perfecting everything fans loved about the franchise. Whilst all three games available at this time had their positives, this was the most polished of the bunch and successfully saved a series which is still going strong today.
