10 Best PS4 Video Games Of 2017

8. Yakuza 0

Sega

Over a decade old and with six games under their belt, the Yakuza series found a new audience in 2017 thanks to the release of the excellent prequel game, 0, for PS4.

Already out in Japan, the latest title from Sega finally released in the West at the start of the year, riding a wave of renewed interest in Japanese action games and capitalising on the sequel's refined gameplay.

Despite telling a ridiculously violent and dark gangster story, the prequel (like all Yakuza games) balances this dour mode with a good dose of wacky comedy that serves to separate Sega's series from similar games in the genre.

Whether coming from the characters themselves or the wide array of activities players can get up to in the title's varied open world, this inconsistent tone actually makes for a charmingly unique story at the heart of the game that's difficult to not lose yourself in.

The prequel doesn't do anything the series hasn't done in the past, but damn if Yakuza 0 isn't one of the most surprising hidden gems of the year.
