10 Best PS4 Video Games Of 2017
5. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Let's get this out the way first: from a pure gameplay perspective, Hellblade is underwhelming. With the entire eight-hour experience split up between solving the same puzzles or fighting the same enemies, the indie title relies on repetitive mechanics far too heavily.
Thankfully though, Hellblade doesn't need amazing gameplay to still be a great experience. Focusing on the titular Senua's descent into madness, it's the presentation, characters and world that act as the narrative-driven game's most memorable takeaways. The central performance from video-editor-turned-actress Melina Juergens in particular is outstanding, and carries this emotionally draining experience once the puzzle solving loses its lustre.
Exploring metaphorical and highly-interpretive environments while Senua battles her own psychosis (brilliantly brought to life by the game's superb use of 3D sound), Hellblade plays out almost like the most surreal Darren Arronofsky or David Lynch film brought to life in video game form.
Ninja Theory's daring indie release is everything the medium should strive to be, and although its gameplay does admittedly sag in its final hours, those drawbacks don't detract too much from an otherwise exceptional experience.
