6. Resident Evil (GameBoy Color)

As part of a push to get Resident Evil into as many hands as possible and solidify its place as one of the most well regarded video games of all time, Capcom were keen to put the series on Nintendo’s handheld systems.

Development began by hiring a small British studio called M4 who tried everything in their power to translate the PlayStation classic onto the much smaller GameBoy Color cartridge.

Early looks of the game teased in magazines were promising but after a few delays the project got scrapped. Capcom were not happy with how well the title was faring on the very different hardware and thought releasing it would be a mistake.

Some years later, through the power of the internet, unfinished ROMs of the game found their way into the hands of hungry Resi fans. It’s definitely a case of being able to see both the potential and the reason it was cancelled. The tank controls and fixed camera gameplay struggle to convert over in any comfortable way and navigating what is meant to be a 3D space using only 2D sprites is awkward.

But it’s still striking to see so much of the Spencer Mansion faithfully recreated in 8-bit graphics and it's sure fire contender for one of the most ambitious GameBoy games you'll ever see - even if it never quite made it store shelves.
