10 Best Resident Evil Games You Didn't Play
4. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
Resident Evil has succeeded over the years through reinvention and by being a bit of an all-rounder. Great atmosphere, decent stories, iconic characters and a selection of different playstyles: its had it all.
The Mercenaries, as we truly came to know it, was a side-game packaged with Resident Evil 4 that acted as a kind of time trial of enemy killing action that challenged hardened players to set impressive scores. Forgetting all the entertainment to be had in the campaign for a moment, sometimes you just wanted to boot the game up and murder some monsters. The mode returned in RE5 and then, rather unexpectedly, got it's own title.
Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D is a perfect handheld instalment for the franchise as the lack of a deep story mode makes it easy to pick up and play. Bringing together maps, weapons and characters from RE4 and RE5 (as well as Claire Redfield making her Mercenaries debut); it's a nice and simple way to get your fix of over-the-shoulder action on the go.
Mercs 3D's mission modes offer short bursts of Resident Evil gameplay for those that couldn't get enough of the home console versions, and it can be played co-op locally or online.
Sometimes the simple answer is the right one, and Mercenaries 3D really didn't try to be more than it was.
