10 Best RPGs In A Modern Setting

3. Persona 5

yakuza 7
Atlus

This entire list could be filled with the Persona series and the wider Shin Megami Tensei franchise but that wouldn't really make an interesting varied list so I'll stick to just having the best game in the franchise Persona 5 on it.

In Persona 5 you play as an unnamed protagonist who somehow manages to have no social skills yet still be infinitely cool (I've only mastered the no social skills part myself).

He alongside his friends form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts to steal the corrupted hearts from the evil adults. This will force them to become better people. It obviously has a lot to say about modern-day Japan and society as a whole with corrupt adults being in charge without a care for the people they're meant to be serving.

A lot of the game takes place in modern-day Tokyo which is just a really fun setting to explore yet you also visit Palaces, these are manifestations of somebodies corrupted and negative thoughts and whether these are modern-day locations depends on the person.

It's just really interesting having a JRPG where one minute you'll be fighting evil monsters in a corrupted subway and the next you'll be working a part-time job as a flower salesman.
