10 Best RPGs In A Modern Setting
4. Disco Elysium
In Disco Elysium you might not spend your time fighting against God but it is very much an RPG. The game encapsulates the "role-playing" part of role-playing game better than any other entry on this list.
You play as detective Harrier Du Bois as he's suffering from amnesia from drinking and taking too many drugs. Since he doesn't exactly know what kind of person he is, that's up to you to decide which is where the role-playing mechanics come into play.
You must chat your way through many-a conversation, making friends and enemies whilst trying to solve the case that you were meant to be doing instead of drinking your life away.
There are still more traditional RPG elements in it like skill-checks, a levelling system, and gear but the focus of the game is definitely on the conversations which makes sense due to the setting.
The game takes place in the world of Elysium which is definitely slightly older than any other entry on this list taking place in something similar to the 1950s but it's still modern enough to qualify.
They have atom bombs, trucks, and semi-modern looking guns in Elysium, I don't see anything like that in more traditional fantasy games.
