10 Best Spectacle Fighter Video Games Of All Time

6. God Of War 3

The first two God of War games are easily better than this trilogy-capping third instalment, but God of War 3 embraced the "spectacle fighter" side of combat that's always been there, even back at the very beginning.

Where the original GoW had a phenomenal fight against the hydra and GoW 2 gave us a projectile-spewing pegasus ride through the clouds, 3 opens on Kratos and the Titans climbing Mt. Olympus to wrench control back from the Gods.

Just this setup alone lets Sony Santa Monica try out a ton of fancy camera moves, seeing shots bend and swoop around the Angry Spartan, zooming all the way out until he's just a speck on the back of some gargantuan beast. Fights against Leviathan and Poseidon gave way to battling a being so huge, they can't even fit on the screen: Cronos.

This Galactus-sized foe has Kratos clambering around arms, hands, head and eyes just to pry open a weak spot, the whole time Sony walk the line between controllable cutscene and outright visual splendour.

God of War did need a reboot and 2018's recontextualisation of the character worked wonders, but what an exemplary addition to the action genre God of War 3 will always be.
