10 Best Stories That ONLY Work As Video Games
7. Portal 2
Applying narrative to a video game with a static puzzle per room set-up is no easy feat. The first Portal did a great job of it by introducing the world to the evil that was GLaDOS, but Portal 2 took that ball and rolled with it, crafting an excellent story that worked thanks to the lore of Aperture Science and the gameplay.
In Portal 2, you play as Chell after she awakens in the Aperture Science Facility. From there, you attempt to escape with the Stephen Merchant-voiced personality core Wheatley by your side, only to end up running into everyone's favourite cake enthusiast GLaDOS. You then reluctantly work together with her to take down Wheatley after he takes over and gets drunk with power.
There's so much in this narrative that works because of the video game parameters. The uneasy feeling of working alongside someone who you've actively opposed before, the puzzles making you feel like you're truly part of the world, and even discovering the history of Aperture and GLaDOS herself through those excellent Cave Johnson audio recordings.
The story is a perfect guiding hand that would not be satisfying were if not for the classic Portal puzzles and your involvement.
