10 Best Stories That ONLY Work As Video Games

6. Oxenfree

Mass Effect 2
Night School Studio

Oxenfree puts you in control of Alex, a teenager set to arrive on Edwards Island for a party. However, she and her friends (or just acquaintances) end up being pulled into a mysterious battle for their lives against the ghosts of a submarine lost at sea.

So, teens getting lost on an island after uncovering a supernatural event that puts them in danger; so far, so typical narrative, right? But, where Oxenfree thrives is in subverting your expectations, letting you affect the narrative and giving you some of the most exciting dialogue gameplay in any video game. That's what makes this story so unique.

The story plays out linearly but changes depending on your decisions, giving you plenty of autonomy in the narrative. Not only that but the overly convoluted mystery of the island and the supernatural events haunting you unfold themselves naturally through exploration and dialogue, in a way that any other medium would struggle to pull off.

It masterfully juggles spookiness with mystery with typical teenage drama, making it one exceptional game. With the upcoming sequel scheduled for release this year, you'd better get on the boat and venture to the island yourself.
