4. What Does Shy Guy Look Like?

Shy Guys debuted in Doki Doki Panic, which was reskinned into Super Mario Bros. 2. Excluding Birdo, Shy Guy is the only character from Doki Doki Panic to become a mainstream character in the Mario series.

Despite the fact his battle strategy in the original game was... walking, Shy Guy became popular due to his cute appearance and his enigmatic mask. Mario fans have speculated for decades on Shy Guy's true appearance.

In Yoshi's Island DS, the Shy Guy's "eyes" close when he sleeps, suggesting his "mask" is actually his face. Then again, there are some enemies like Bandit who have the ability to change the expression of their mask so Shy Guys may have the same ability. In Paper Mario: Color Splash, Mario is told he would not make a good Shy Guy because he has a face, implying these critters don't have any.

When he wins a trophy in Mario Power Tennis, Shy Guy trips, knocking his mask off. When Luigi gazes upon his true form, he is horrified by what he sees. This scene has popularised the idea that Shy Guys were created through genetic experimentation, which has left them hideously deformed.
