10 Best Super Mario Fan Theories That Explain Everything

3. Who Is Jumpman?

King Boo Bowser
Nintendo

Mario debuted in the 1981 game, Donkey Kong. This character is considered a prototype Mario since he has some key differences. Instead of a plumber, he is a carpenter. Also, his original name was Jumpman and his love interest was Pauline, not Peach.

Because he looks like Mario, surely it has to be the same character, right? But what if Jumpman is actually Mario's dad? The instruction manual states his name is Mario but, as has been mentioned before, there's a lot of evidence that "Mario" might be his forename and surname. As a result, his father would be called Mario as well.

Also, this incarnation of Mario has a completely different personality. According to the plot, Donkey Kong was Mario's pet who turned against his master after he was mistreated. In the sequel, Donkey Kong Jr. Mario imprisons the ape and attacks his son, who is trying to rescue his father. Does that sound like the same loveable character that's served as Nintendo's mascot for decades?

Also, this version of Donkey Kong is actually Cranky when he was young. Since Cranky is now much older, this would imply ten or twenty years have gone by. So why hasn't Mario aged a day?
