It may not be the dominant force it once was, but DayZ deserves some credit for being one of the games spearheading the survival game revolution. DayZ started life as an ARMA II mod, taking the game's realistic shooting mechanics and gritty realism, and throwing them into a post-apocalyptic semi-rural Soviet setting packed with zombies. But zombies and roaming bands of other players aren't your only worries, as you'll need to take care of basic essentials such as (non-rotten) food and (clean) water, and warding off illnesses like cholera, hepatitis, and - that old video game classic - dysentery. If you take a shot from a sniper who's made his nest in some abandoned tenement room with a window, then recovering from the shot isn't just a simple case of waiting it out. There's a good chance you'll be bleeding, and will need to bandage it up lest you pass out and leave yourself vulnerable to an unceremonious death. It's a cruel world out there, and once you die you start from Square 1. DayZ is still in Early Access, and its slow development has frustrated some of its players, but at its best this no-frills survival veteran is one of the best around for the hardcore crowd.
