On account of being free-to-play and fairly easy to pick up and play (by the tough standards of survival games), Unturned is the perfect entry point into the genre. The game takes place in a zombie-apocalypse setting, in which you must fend off zombies, other players, hunger and cold in order to survive as long as possible. Unturned has a levelling system, whereby killing zombies lets you unlock skills such as increased damage and improved metabolism so you don't starve to death as quickly. Enhancing the game's friendly feel is the pixel-blocky Minecraft-like visual style, though don't let this trick you into thinking Unturned is a walk in the park - it's still permadeath, and therefore constantly challenging and suspenseful. Unturned can be played both single-player and with a group of up to 24 players. The limited server sizes mean that the game doesn't feel as anarchic as other online survival games, and many servers have PvP switched off so you can focus on banding together (though where's the fun in not being able to shoot your mates in the back of the head and run off with their resources?).
