10 Best Utility Spells In Dungeons & Dragons
2. Minor Illusion
Now we are entering the realms of near-limitless potential, in the right hand’s minor illusion can be as powerful as any other spell and it is only a cantrip. Available to bards, sorcerers, warlocks and wizard’s minor illusion is limited only by the player’s imagination.
This spell allows you to make any sound of your choosing for 1 minute, the volume of this sound can vary from a whisper to a scream and can even impersonate someone’s voice. This could get you into that secret meeting by impersonating the boss’s right-hand man. Maybe enemies are about to discover you around a corner. The roar of an Owlbear will make them think twice. Don’t actually know how to play an instrument, just fake it.
The other feature of this spell is the ability to create the image of an object within a 5-foot square. While the image cannot create sounds, light, odours or any other sensory effect it can basically look like anything. A chest, a set of footprints, a pile of gold coins, it's completely up to you. Just don’t let anyone interact with it, they will go right through it.
Some of the other spells in this list, specifically, ones that use spell slots may be able to create more complex effects. But you will get so much use out of minor illusion that you would be silly not to take.
