10 Best Video Game Documentaries Of All Time

8. Second Skin

Released: 7 March 2008

Second Skin explores the world of MMORPGs by following a group of subjects who spend most of their time playing them. You can tell the 95 minute documentary was filmed over a decade ago, though it is still eminently watchable and many of the themes are just as relevant today.

Focusing on the lives and habits of its featured gamers, Second Skin was filmed over a period of years and demonstrates an impressive commitment to its core subjects. There is plenty of drama, heartbreak and humour packed in and for the most part, you do not get the impression that anyone is being exploited. The only drawback is that at times the documentary can feel a little overly ambitious as it jumps around to squeeze in as many elements as possible. Be prepared for lots of talking heads.

World of Warcraft and Everquest 2 get the most attention so if you’re a big fan of either of those this is one to watch. Otherwise, don’t worry as the documentary was designed to appeal to a broad audience.
