The story of Resident Evil's original dual naming convention is itself pretty cool, but after 20 years, perhaps even Capcom are getting sick of living the double life.

According to various reports over the years, back during the original game's development, Capcom wanted the franchise to simply be known as 'Biohazard', only for Sony's Chris Kramer to point out, that not only would the word be impossible to copyright in the west, but they'd already been beaten to the punch by a DOS game of that very same name.

As such - and literally just because it was a humorous pun on fighting zombies in a house - 'Resident Evil' was born from a selection of pitched names. 20 years later - comprised of Biohazard being the name of RE in the east and Resident Evil over here - and the registered name for part seven is 'Resident Evil 7: Biohazard', finally bringing the title across the shores for the very first time.

Have you found yourself using the word 'Biohazard' in reference to Resident Evil 7 in any fashion? Of course not, but this could be an indication that a unified brand name is coming at some point in the future.
