In comparison to the rest of the games in the series, Resident Evil 4 really tore up the rulebook on what a game in the iconic Capcom franchise was supposed to be. Subbing out the survival horror roots of the original games, R.E 4 decided to opt in favour of a more action-packed title filled to the brim with loud explosions and big shootouts.

Love or hate the decision to switch up the tone of the series, it helped bring about the best minigame the franchise has ever produced in Mercenaries. A minigame so good that it hasn't left the Resident Evil series since and has also spawned its very own spin off title, Mercenaries is a game mode that allows players to take control of any one of five characters from the game and begin blasting away as many zombies as they can either until they die, or the timer runs out.

There are four levels in Resident Evil 4's version of Mercenaries: the village, the castle, the island and Water World Island, with each level rewarding more strategic and skillful players with power ups, time increases and multipliers to help them bump up their tally. Not only are all of these maps visually impressive and feel like a part of the Resident Evil universe, but they are so well suited to a game like this and offer an immense sense of strategy and replayability that just makes Mercenaries overall so darn addictive.
