6. Faith Connors (Mirror's Edge)
Another rare example of a female superhero as the protagonist of a video game is Mirror's Edge's Faith Connors. Connors is one of the most progressive female characters to lead a game; her androgynous image, physical fitness and casual, sporty clothing moves her away from the long-lasting trend towards highly sexualised animated women (such as many Final Fantasy, Soul Calibur or Dead or Alive's characters, for instance). Although she doesn't have the same supernatural abilities of others on the list, her incredible athleticism grants her a worthwhile spot. She is a "Runner" in a futuristic dystopia, traversing scarily complex and apparently insurmountable obstacle courses at speed. She is ultimately a just figure, attempting to clear her sister's name when she is framed for the murder of mayoral candidate Robert Pope. She is also an excellent example of a rebellious underdog fighting against a corrupt system, as she lives in a world of hyper-surveillance and corruption - but refuses to allow her actions to be dictated by the state. Although by the end of the series' first game she has failed to change the system, and is blamed in the media for subsequent problems that have arisen, it is implied that she has been doing the right thing throughout. While her athletic abilities are not referred to as other-wordly, they are honed to unbelievable levels, making her a gaming superhero all the same.
