The overnight sensation which brought the niche of horror gaming into the mainstream, the Five Nights At Freddy's series has garnered widespread acclaim and pushback from the gaming public as - depending on which side of the thoroughly meaningless argument you are - is either the most revolutionary horror game since Silent Hill 2, or the most overrated thing ever made ever.

Freddy Fazbear, unlike his predecessor Slenderman, is the kind of horror villain that can scare pretty much anyone. And all through gameplay alone, as the FNAF antagonists utilized the sound coming from your speakers combined with your own anxiety, to slowly drive you mad with suspense. One of the few utilization of a jump scare in horror that is 100% warranted and earned.

But the best part is the lore behind the characters. Which isn't the best, but the way it's applied, hidden in plain sight with clues, red herrings, twists and turns, is what makes it great. It inspired an entire generation of young gamers to think a bit harder and look a bit closer at the media they consume. And no amount of resentful contrarian whining about how it's "just a night trap clone" will ever take away how good a thing that is.

An example of a villain remarkable purely in their effect on the player, and their overall influence on their behavior. Two things all villains of this interactive storytelling medium should strive for.
