Spider-Man video games have been somewhat hit or miss for years, and while there are far more bad ones than there are good, the ones that play well are excellent titles. They don't come around often, but in recent years, Spider-Man games have been pretty fantastic.

Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the best titles to feature everyone's Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The game was released in 2005 for all the major consoles and platforms, where it dominated with excellent reviews. Ultimate Spider-Man is only the second open-world Spider-Man title, and it's far better than Spider-Man 2, which incorporated similar gameplay.

The game is set within the Ultimate Universe of Earth-1610, and players aren't limited to Spider-Man. You can also play as Venom, and the gameplay and mechanics are different for each character. As you play through the story, gameplay flips from one character to the other, forming a cohesive narrative involving both Spider-Man and Venom.

The game was positively received by players and critics upon its release. While the boss-fights can be exceptionally difficult, they are nonetheless well-designed and entertaining. You won't mind trying to best your foe over and over again as you swing your way through New York City, beating up bad guys and saving the day.
