1. The Superhero Fight (God Of War)

The only game with two appearances on this list, God of War is already one of the strongest contenders for game of the year, a fact which everyone seemingly agrees on as soon as they encounter Baldur for the first time in the title's opening act.

Fighting Draugr and mini-bosses before this single enemy, the initial hour makes you feel pretty confident that you can take anyone on, giving you a handle on the game's controls and combat. However, this first major test of might throws all of that out the window.

Although the title is essentially a Norse mythology hack and slasher, every time you encounter Baldur it turns into the best superhero game on the market. Exchanging blows that literally tear apart mountains, the bloody battle is an immediate highlight, presented in such a cinematic way that at times it's difficult to remember you're actually playing, rather than just watching a cutscene.

There are a couple similar fights throughout the rest of the game, but none match the intensity that was gained from just how surprising this first bout was.
