10 Best Video Games Levels Of 2018 (So Far)

2. Final Confrontation (A Way Out)

A Way Out
EA

Although A Way Out is ostensibly a co-op action-adventure experience, it's actually about 12 different types of game in one. Occasionally it's a third-person shooter, then a walking simulator and then a 2.5D beat-em-up, making for a great blend of distinct, varied levels. Though the hospital escape in particular highlights everything the title does well, the emotionally-charged confrontation between Vincent and Leo in the final chapter just had to make this list.

Even though it might not be all that surprising, the way the game handles the fact that Leo was an undercover cop the whole time, and then pits not only the characters themselves, but the players who have been helping each other out on the whole journey, against one another, is genius.

Not only is it tense to be suddenly trying to kill the other player and wanting your character to survive from a narrative perspective, but the way the developers used split-screen features to foster the necessary resentment towards someone you'd otherwise relied on for the past eight hours transforms the sequence into something which simply couldn't have happened in any other medium.

It might not be original, but A Way Out's blood-soaked finale is enough to shatter friendships.
