7. Devil May Cry
I approached DmC with a huge air of skepticism given that movie reboots p*ss me off enough, and seeing video games go the same way is just depressing. Nothing indicated to me that the franchise was in need of a retooling, but developers Ninja Theory had a go anyway, and ended up crafting what is easily one of the best games in the franchise. Though many - myself included - were frustrated with the decision to change Dante's look above all else, it's something which if you decide to look past it will result in an exhilarating, even intoxicating action experience. Simply put, this is an utterly breathless game, somehow upping the pace and insanity of the previous titles, while revamping the franchise with an entirely new, gorgeous aesthetic that makes flying around and causing chaos even more of a joy than it usually is. Excellent voice acting and a stronger script help bolster the amusing dialogues between the fights, even if the narrative is still as inconsequential as it has ever been. Sure, it's more aimed at casuals than previous games - as made clear by the considerably easier difficulty - but I'm definitely intrigued to see where it goes from here...
