2. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Not just the best RPG of 2013 to date, but quite possibly one of the greatest ever made, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is everything one could hope for from what is essentially an interactive Studio Ghibli movie. With the famed Japanese animation studio contributing plenty of gorgeous hand-drawn, animated cut-scenes to the mix, this is as vibrant and striking an RPG as you're ever likely to play, with protagonist Oliver setting off on an adventure with his new pal Mr. Drippy that will reward those who value slow-burn character development over deeper RPG elements. The game may not be particularly complex by most RPG standards, yet given its aesthetic and style, that's rather appropriate. Still, there are a wealth of grand flourishes that more than support its intentional simplicity; the storyline is moving and thoroughly engrossing, the voice acting top notch, and the score easily on par with anything you'd hear in a Ghibli movie. Outstanding.
