10 Best Video Games Of 2017 You Haven't Played
9. Pyre
Third game from stellar developers Supergiant Games, Pyre combines the studio's world-building from Bastion with the combat system of Transistor, going one step further by developing an NBA Jam-esque game of dunking an orb in your opponent's goal.
Pyre enters into entire new realms of intensity with every bout where you're facing off against other players coming with narrative backing. Your crew are all competing to earn their freedom, having been locked out the capital in the "Downside" for one reason or another - but only one can go free per-game, and that's if you even win.
All this means that as you begin to learn your fellow "criminals" and wanderers' past crimes, wants and desires, each subsequent match puts that little bit more on the line. You know that winning will let someone leave, but it's often your best player or favourite character, making for one hell of a tough decision that changes gameplay and story as the numbers dwindle.
With scores of different endings based on who makes it out, a gargantuan amount of text fleshing out the game's world and satisfying gameplay making every slam-dunk explode off the screen, Pyre is a beautiful, truly impressive work of art in every respect.
