8. Prey
Victim to Bethesda implementing a review policy where outlets weren't granted access until a day before launch, besides the occasional trade show appearance, Prey had to try and make a dent in one of the most solid years in gaming history, all by itself.
Sadly, the lack of people playing Prey speaks for itself, but this is so much more than "Bioshock in space". Yes, there are carryover elements such as world-building through various computer terminals and audio diaries that flesh out what's going on, but at its core, Arkane Studios have some phenomenal ideas that upend the "immersion-heavy FPS" genre.
First up are Mimics: Small globulous spider-things that can literally take the shape of everything from chairs to coffee cups. Chase one into a room and suddenly you're in a horror. Lose sight for a second and you better have taken note whether there were two mugs on that table when you came in...
Add a ton of abilities for main-man Morgan Yu and things like the GLOO Cannon that let you makeshift stairways to secrets and pathways throughout the ship and you have one of the most inventive titles of the decade... that nobody picked up.
