8. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII has been touted as the series' crown jewel since release. For this reason, it was no surprise to see Square spare no expense with Final Fantasy VII Remake, now the first instalment in a trilogy.

Graphics have never been better, which is a huge achievement considering the franchise's reputation, and combat utilises more action-oriented mechanics mixed with the materia system and turn-based ethos of the original, pleasing old and new fans alike.

Granted the reboot only follows the first act of the 1997 version but nobody would accuse FFVII Remake of lacking in content. Everything from FFVII had been fleshed out, adding nuance to every character, environment, interaction, boss battle, conflict, and cutscene. Also, the decision to keep the plot entirely in Midgar boasts a tighter and more personal story overall.

However, there's one aspect that stood out about this reimagining: Square Enix deconstructing the entire narrative and rebuilding it, so the classic plot is still intact, but exists within a larger meta-narrative. Rather than mimicking the previous game's story-beats, Remake offers a new perspective while still maintaining the soul of the old-school version. This decision has proved divisive, but is an ingenious way to make everything about Final Fantasy VII feel fresh and new, as the trilogy plays out.
