10 Best Video Games Of The Decade (So Far)
3. Baldur's Gate 3
Games like Skull & Bones and Concord spent an eternity in development, with the end-result having little to show for it.
However, Baldur's Gate 3 went in the opposite direction. Despite having a six-year development cycle, it feels like Larian Interactive were working on the long-awaited follow-up for twice that length, since it's overflowing with content.
The breathtaking threequel reinvents the classic mechanics while still feeling ingrained in what made the previous instalments figuratively and literally magical. Despite the game's complexities and the implementation of the elaborate Dungeons & Dragons ruleset, BG3 is accessible to people unfamiliar with the table-top IP.
You have a great understanding of each main character, thanks to the flawless facial animations, voice-acting, and script, making it easy to get invested in their stories, individually and collectively.
The vast array of side-quests never feels excessive since each were designed with meticulous care. Many of these sub-plots turn out to be directly relevant to the overarching story, compelling players to explore and take part in as many side-missions as possible, not just for every equipment or EXP, but to appreciate the subtler aspects of the epic narrative.
Though the promos for Baldur's Gate 3 looked impressive, nobody was truly ready for it. Larian Interactive's magnum opus isn't just the new benchmark for the series, but for RPGs, D&D titles, and gaming as a whole.
