8. Wolfenstein 2009
Although the recent Wolfenstein games have received critical acclaim and mainstream recognition for rebooting the classic franchise in a new and creative way, there was actually a 2009 sequel that attempted to do the same thing; and it was pretty damn good.
Overlooked at the time and completely forgotten about today, the shooter managed to breathe new life into the ageing franchise by cranking the alternative history elements up to the max, focusing on the Nazi's obsession with the occult and the supernatural to facilitate some genuinely innovative gameplay mechanics.
Unfortunately, the title only managed to sell 100,000 copies in its first month, again because it came at a time where everyone was frustrated with WW2 games; even the ones that let you duke it out against Nazi mutants and members of the KKK.
