10 Big Reasons To Revisit Red Dead Redemption
2. John Marston - Rockstar's Greatest Protagonist?
John Marston steps off the ferry as a fully-realized character, complete with all the idiosyncrasies and contradictions inherent in humanity.
The man's history casts a shadow a mile long, and while it's easy to say he's a "bad" man as he's certainly done some things that most would consider positively monstrous, the game makes it a point to never delineate good and evil with such arbitrary terms as right or wrong.
Despite his violent past, John is ultimately the most sympathetic character in the game - an honorable man in a morally barren world of corrupt lawmen disguising their depravity with flowery words and empty sentiments. It's through John's eyes that players experience the final days of the Wild West, and his death is symbolic of the closing of an era.
Rockstar's focus on a three-character narrative for GTA V was a stroke of genius, and definitely worth another try. But at the end of the day, many players just couldn't connect with either of the three protagonists and this resulted in a lack of genuine investment when it came down to deciding their fates (still a brilliant game though).
