10 Biggest Gaming News Stories That Shocked The World

8. No Russian - Modern Warfare 2

After causing quite the stir in the gaming industry with its ridiculously-well received first foray into modern warfare with...er...Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 caused quite a stir in a very different way. While everyone pretty much says that Modern Warfare 2 is by far one of the best games in the series, it's early mission entitled "No Russian" really caused havoc due to its graphic nature. It's worth noting however that this mission was entirely optional - a warning ahead of time prompted the gamer to skip it if they wished, but many went ahead anyway not knowing what was in store. The basic premise of the mission is that you're an undercover agent working within a terrorist cell. In your covert operation, you're tasked by the terrorists to help them attack innocent civilians in an airport and - if you wish - you can mow them down using your assault rifle. This, naturally, caused a lot of controversy due to the fact that you're directly controlling someone within a terrorist cell, tapping into the fears of many in the wake of 9/11 and the war on terror. Due to Call of Duty's huge popularity at the time and the level of hype surrounding Modern Warfare 2, the issue was debated back and forth in many different territories, with some arguing the merits of gaming pushing the boundaries of player agency while others condemning the content as downright inappropriate. No matter what, this one certainly got tongues wagging about the Call of Duty brand.
