Days Gone was a PlayStation 4 exclusive that had been hyped up a lot by Sony, along with other exclusives like Horizon: Zero Dawn and God Of War.

An open-world zombie survival game, Days Gone hinged on two novel design elements.

The first was the staggering number of zombies that could be on screen at once, featured as a number of roaming hordes. The second was an emphasis on driving and customizing your motorcycle.

Unlike its beloved Playstation-only peers, Days Gone released to an underwhelming reaction from critics, coming in at a Meer 71 on Metacritic. Many reviews cited repetitive gameplay and a general lack of polish.

Fans, however, strongly disagreed, giving it a solid 8.4 user score on Metacritic, praising its unique premise, strong character development, and novel mechanics. It threw some unique quirks into a familiar genre and a gameplay loop that cycled between survival-horror, driving, and the satisfaction of successfully eliminating hordes.

Ultimately, Days Gone was an unfortunate victim of open world fatigue for critics. Cramming these huge games into such long sessions over such a short amount of time just doesn't reflect how many of us play and enjoy them.
