10 Biggest Surprises In E3 History
2. SEGA Saturn Released... Today
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0ozAQjOyZ4The very first E3 in 1995 brought with it a lot of speculation about what the show could actually bring to the gaming industry. Though it's easy to look back now and see how much potential the event had - due in part to it arriving right at the time that Sony were entering the console race - at the time it's future was a little less certain.
Happily the event didn't disappoint, as both SEGA and Sony were looking to one-up each other in whatever way possible.
For SEGA that meant doing something that hasn't been done before or since. During the course of their conference, the company not only unveiled more information about its Saturn console but also announced that it was going on sale that very day in a limited number of outlets.
The buzz this created was instantaneous, with SEGA managing to pull of the first major shock of E3. Of course, in hindsight we now see what a bad decision this was as the company had failed to inform developers of their plans and had cherry-picked which stores would be able to stock the console, thus angering every other store that wasn't chosen. Way to annoy practically everybody who would have a big say in the console's fortunes SEGA.
Of course, that wasn't the only surprise of E3 1995...
